Abra Huaytire, an absolute must for road lovers

Abra Huaytire is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.768m (15643ft) above the sea level, located on the border of Moquegua and Tacna departments in southern Peru.

The winding mountain road to the summit is totally paved. It’s called Carretera 36A. Its many twists, turns and narrows can pose a challenge to even the most experienced drivers. This route is not recommended if your passengers are prone to car sickness.

Remember this is a mountainous area, climbing up a high mountain, with a notorius absence of oxygen. Altitude and extreme weather are always a factor. The pass is 203 km (126 miles) long, running east-west from Mazocruz towards Moquegua.
