Púsac-Uchumarca road, recommended to drivers with strong nerves

Carretera Púsac-Uchumarca is a high mountain road located in the Bolívar Province of Peru. This road tests the skill, and courage, of any driver. It’s definitely not for anyone suffering from vertigo or a fear of landslides.

Carretera Púsac-Uchumarca

The road runs from Púsac (at 1.434m above the sea level) towards Uchumarca (at 3.684m above the sea level). The unpaved road is pretty narrow and steep. It’s 34.1 km long pretty much carved out of the side of a steep mountain. The road is bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. The most challenging part of the road is a short 4.9km section, featuring 16 hairpin turns. At this point, the elevation gain is 454m and the average gradient is 9,26%, with sections up to 15%. The road and scenery however, is very impressive. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions.
