the world's most spectacular roads

Carretera Santa María-Santa Teresa

Located in the Cusco Region of Peru, the road between Santa María and Santa Teresa is one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

The road is 22.1 km long. This road tests the skill, and courage, of any driver. It’s definitely not for anyone suffering from vertigo or a fear of landslides. Only the suicidal, the insane, or the paid-to-do-this should ever drive down. It links the small towns of Santa María and Santa Teresa, near the Machu Picchu ruins.
The surface of the road is gravel. There is little room for error on this road. Your wheels will be astounded at the wonderful views of the mountains spread out before you! They are terrible for drivers who are prone to vertigo.

In many places the road is bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails over the Urubamba River. The road climbs up at an elevation of 2.000m above the sea level.
