Spectacular asphalted high mountain road, between Chivay and Arequipa, located in Caylloma province in the Arequipa region, Peru. The road climbs Abra Patapampa, a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.910m (16,110ft) above the sea level.
Located in the Colca valley, the road is asphalted. It’s 149 km long and links the traditional mountain village of Chivay and the area’s provincial capital city of Arequipa. The views of fine landscapes with vicuña, llamas, alpacas and Andean duck are superb. Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. It suffers the harsh meteorological conditions of the area every winter.
Don’t forget your camera! The journey comprises the 34A and AR-109 roads. Do not take this drive if you have respiratory problems or any type of heart condition. Altitude and extreme weather are always a factor at any time of year.
