The road to San José de Parac is said to be the scary of scaries
San José de Parac is a high mountain town at an elevation of 3.815m (12,516ft) above the sea level, located in San Mateo District, in the province Huarochirí of Peru.
The creepy road to the town is said to be one of the scariest roads in the country. It’s a cliff road bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters unprotected by guardrails. If you're afraid of heights, it's probably best to keep your eyes forward. The curvy road descending down the cliffs, is often so narrow that you can’t turn the first time… This tortuous route should not be attempted by those who don't know how to reverse or beginner drivers. It's totally impassable for 2 medium cars at the same time.
The surreal road finds its way through the rocks, above the dangerous drop off. It’s totally unpaved but navigable by all passenger vehicles. It’s called Camino a San José de Parac. Be careful: this road is not for the sissies. One mistake can have consequences.
Not recommended to newbies. The route is dangerous and steep. Starting from San Mateo, the road is 11.2 km (6.95 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 604 meters. The average gradient is 5.39%.
