Portezuelo Caballo Muerto
Portezuelo Caballo Muerto is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.410m (14,468ft) above the sea level, located in the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park in the Atacama Region of Chile.
The road to reach this pass starts from the Cuesta Codoceo pass. It’s gravel. 4x4 recommended. The temperature oscillates between day and night time. The climb is simply terrible, with a notorius lack of oxygen that tests the organisms and a high degree of steepness. It has a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and blizzards, and driving under these conditions, can be extremely challenging. The air dryness and the oscillation of temperatures that takes place during the day and night is one of the features of this area. Day is warm by direct sun and nights are extremely cold. The wind is usually quite strong at mountain areas. High winds blow here all year long. Even in summer you can confront with snowy days. Temperatures here in the winter are brutally cold. With such a high summit altitude the road can be closed anytime due to snowfalls. The zone is prone to heavy mist and can be dangerous in low visibility conditions.
Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. It can often be treacherous, with ice and snow accumulating even in the summer, so exercise caution as you make your way. It is subject to winter snowfalls with such a high summit altitude, and the road can be closed anytime when the access is not cleared of snow.
