How to drive the unpaved Road B-245 in northern Chile?

B-245 is a very scenic high mountain road located in northeastern Chile. The road offers great views of volcanoes and lakes.

Is Road B-245 unpaved?

The road is totally unpaved, and comprises steep sections. It’s not recommended for low clearance vehicles. It tops out at 4.565m above sea level. Stay on the track: danger, mine field. 

How long is Road B-245?

The road is 176 km long and runs suth-north from San Pedro, on Ruta 21, to San Pedro de Atacama.

How to get by car to Geisers del Tatio?

The road leads to Geisers del Tatio, the highest geyser field of the world, at an elevation of 4.320m (14,173ft) above sea level. Watch your step - in some places, visitors have fallen through the thin crust into underlying pools of scalding water and suffered severe burns. Dress in layers: it's toe-numbingly cold at sunbreak but you'll bake in the van on the way back down. The best time to see the geysers is at 06:00, so make sure you wipe the sleep from your eyes if you want experience the awesome spectacle. To the tourists is recommended to take thick clothes, bath suit, towel, sun protector and mineral water.
