Paso Carirriñe

Paso Carirriñe is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 1.223m (4,012ft) above the sea level, located in the Andes, on the border between Chile and Argentina.

The pass links Junín de los Andes (Argentina) and Coñaripe and Liquiñe (Chile). To reach the summit, on the Chilean side, the road is called Ruta CH-5 and on the Argentinian side is Ruta Provincial 6. Both roads are gravel.
It’s a real challenging road and a true test of your vehicle and your stamina because the road abounds in twists and turns. The road over the pass is gravel and sand and may be closed most of the year due to snowfalls, minor landslides and rehabilitation. On the Chilean side, the road is called CH-201. It’s gravel but drivable on good conditions. The Argentinian side, ruta provincial Nº 62, is a forest road, gravel and very bumpy. On this side is extremely narrow. You usually get a few rough patches but nothing really bad.
The road over the pass is closed in winters because the poor maintenance. It is one of the many minor passes between Chile and Argentina so the road is less used but it is a beautiful route. The road has not had work on it in a while and is pretty rough in places. It’s difficult to do it in an ordinary car. It opens for the summer on 15th November from 08:00 to 20:00 hrs.
