Where is Laguna Colorada?
The lake is located in the altiplano of Bolivia, in the southwestern part of the country, near the Chilean border, within the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. The lake is known for its endangered flamingo population.
Why is it called Laguna Colorada?
The lagoon is called Laguna Colorado (Red Lagoon) because it appears red when the perfect combination of sun and wind occurs—usually in the afternoon.
Can I drive to Laguna Colorada?
The road through the lagoon is totally unpaved. It’s a high mountain road running entirely above 4.200m (13,779ft) above sea level, and a 4x4 vehicle is required. It’s 226 km (140 miles) long, running north–south from Villa Alota (in Bolivia) to Portezuelo del Cajón (on the Chilean–Bolivian border).
