Curiquinca

The road to Curiquinca Volcano isn’t an easy one

Curiquinca is a stratovolcano at an elevation of 5.625m (18,454ft) above the sea level, located on the border between Bolivia and Chile. It's one of the highest mountain roads of the country.

The volcano lies in the Atacama desert. The road to the summit is an access trail to a large sulfur deposit. The road is gravel. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. The climb is simply terrible, with a notorius lack of oxygen that tests the organisms and a high degree of steepness. Most people feel altitude sickness at around 2,500-2,800 meters. Near the pass, oxygen is in short supply. Expect strong winds (dusty and dry), sunny conditions (dangerous without sunglasses), take plenty of water and bring at least two full-sized spare tires (they’ll be burning enough to bake a pizza). Expect a dangerous trail. 4x4 recommended. It’s one of the highest roads of South America.
