Camino a Caranavi

Caranavi Road, not for the faint of heart

Close to the popular Death Road but less famous, Camino a Caranavi is a dangerous high mountain road starting in Coroico, with a total length of 76km.

The road, including a part of Route 3starts in Coroico, a town in Nor Yungas Province, in the La Paz Department of western Bolivia. After 76 km and 3 hours driving among mountains, cliffs and precipices, the road arrives to Caranavi, the capital of the Caranavi Province in the Yungas region of Bolivia. Drive with care as this is a mountain road with hairpin curves and dangerous dropoffs. You might want to take this into consideration if you have passengers that don't like heights. Be prepared, this road is not for the faint of heart or ill prepared. One mistake can have serious consequences.

The surface of the road is gravel and rocky. The road is bordered on one side by cliffs and on the other side by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. Words can’t describe the road and pictures don’t do it justice.
