Driving an unpaved mining road to Abra Qillwa Quta in the Andes
Abra Qillwa Quta is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,940 m (16,207 ft) above sea level, located in La Paz Department, in Bolivia. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Abra Qillwa Quta?
The pass is located north of Sunchulli Pass, in the La Paz Department, in the northwestern part of the country, near the Peruvian border, within the Ulla Ulla National Fauna Reserve.
Is Abra Qillwa Quta unpaved?
The road through the pass is totally unpaved and might be washed away after rains. A 4x4 vehicle is required. It’s a mining road, with narrow parts, turns, and steep sections. In order to complete the drive, permission is required from the SERNAP office in La Paz, Bolivia.
How long is Abra Qillwa Quta?
Set high in the Apolobamba range of the Andes, the road through the pass is 24.1 km (14.9 miles) long, running west-east from Hilo Hilo to San Miguel de Thapi.
