The pass links the Coquimbo Region in the north-central part of Chile and the Calingasta department, in the southwestern corner of the San Juan province, in the western part of Argentina.

The road through the pass is totally unpaved, and due to its condition and remoteness, it is far from being an easy drive. The road is narrow, with many hairpin turns, steep sections, and is especially very remote. The road is hardly used. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is required.

The road to the summit is 90.1km (56.4 miles) long, starting from La Vega (in the Valparaiso Region of Chile). To the south, the road leads to another international mountain pass, which is unnamed, where the road ends.
