Driving from Vila do Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande in the island of Santo Antão, in Cape Verde, is a very challenging experience.
Tucked away on the westernmost and largest of the Barlavento islands of Cape Verde, the road from Vila do Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande is very challenging, with hundreds of turns and 50 hairpin turns. The road is paved, with asphalt and cobblestone sections. To drive the road without stopping will take most people between 1.5 and 2 hours.
The road is 34.8km (21.62 miles) long, running south-north from Vila do Porto Novo (the westernmost municipality in Cape Verde and all of Africa but not the mainland) to Ribeira Grande (a municipality on the island which covers one-third of the island and is home to two-thirds of the population). The road is very steep, hitting a 14% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. It tops out at 1.447m (4,747ft) above the sea level.
