On the northern part of Madeira Island, in Portugal, there’s a rather peculiar and dangerous road called Estrada Regional 101 (ER101). Due to Madeira' s dramatic coast line, the road has many curves, narrow passages and steep climbs and descents, and is rugged, slow and old. It's one of the most scenic drives in the world.
Located in nothern Portugal's wine region, Estrada Nacional 222 between Peso da Régua, commonly known as Régua, a municipality in the district of Vila Real and Pinhao, a civil parish in the municipality of Alijó was awarded as the 2015 world's best road. The road is 27km (16 miles) long and features jaw dropping scenery.
