Dedicated to Bud Winter (1925–1945)—a 10th Mountain Division veteran and one of the 33 soldiers who completed the historic 1944 Leadville-to-Aspen ski traverse—this refuge serves as a memorial after he was killed in action in Italy during World War II.

Set high in the Sawatch Range, the road is not plowed in winters. The route is snow free from June to October. Always be prepared for winter weather, even in summer.
