The lakes are located south of the old mining town of St. Elmo, in the western part of Colorado, to the east of Hancock Pass.

Is the road to Hancock Lakes unpaved?

The road to the lakes is totally unpaved. It’s called Forest Road 295. This is a bumpy trail, but the scenery is worth the trip, with alpine tundra, pristine lakes, epic fishing, and high mountain valleys. High-clearance 4-wheel drive recommended.

How long is the road to Hancock Lakes?

Starting from Hancock Ghost Town (where only a foundation of a saloon remains from the remote little boom town), the road to the lakes is 2.41 km (1.5 miles) long. The road ends at a parking area. Along the way, you'll see all sorts of abandoned infrastructure from the previous mining activity in this area.

Is the road to Hancock Lakes open in winter?

Set high in the Rocky Mountains, the road is closed due to snow until late June. The drive should not be attempted if snow is on the trail. High alpine environment; carry adequate supplies and warm clothing even on a hot day.
