Set high in the Boise National Forest, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Forest Road 555EC. High clearance vehicles are recommended for the dirt access road because it is narrow, steep and winding.

The road is usually open from late June through mid-October (weather permitting). It’s 4.02 km (2.5 miles) long, starting at Forest Road 555 (Scott Mountain Road).

The road to the summit is very steep in parts, hitting an 11% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The summit hosts a fire lookout tower, built in 1936.
