How to drive the unpaved road to Hanson Peak in Colorado

Hanson Peak is a high mountain peak located in San Juan County, in the U.S. state of Colorado. East of the summit, a gravel road climbs up to at an elevation of 3.890m (12,762ft) above sea level. It’s one of the highest roads of Colorado.

Where is Hanson Peak?

The peak is located north of Silverton, in the southwestern part of Colorado within the San Juan National Forest. The summit offers excellent views in all directions.

Is the road to Hanson Peak unpaved?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved, with gravel and loose rocks. It’s called Picayune Gulch Road (County Road 9). It is a narrow, single-lane dirt road without any side protection. 4x4 vehicles only.

How long is the road to Hanson Peak?

Starting from Animas Forks, the road to the summit is 6.27km (3.9 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 469m (1,539 ft) and the average gradient is 7.48%. 

Is the road to Hanson Peak open year-round?

Set high in the San Juan Mountains, the road is not plowed in winters. Conditions can change rapidly, be careful of the weather. Access through snow can change daily.
