Red Mountain

Part of the Butte Highlands, the road to the summit is gravel, rocky, tippy and bumpy at times. The road is usually impassable from October to June (weather permitting). The weather can change real quick in Montana so be prepared. Great trail for experienced wheelers. Avoid driving in this area if unpaved mountain roads aren't your strong point. Located in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, 4x4 vehicle with high clearance required. Stay away if you're scared of heights. Expect a trail pretty steep. At the summit there’s a lookout tower built in 1954 which replaced an L-4 groundhouse built in 1933. The views from the lookout are incredible. For your safety, be sure to check the weather forecast before you begin your trip. If there is a thunderstorm in the area, please do not visit a lookout.
