How long is the road to Big Lookout Mountain?

To reach Big Lookout Mountain from Interstate 84, take Exit 338 and follow Lookout Mountain Road, a rough unpaved track. Ignore side turnoffs and stay on the main route, following signs to the mountain. About 15 miles in, you’ll reach a gated road on the left that climbs to the summit—there’s space for one vehicle to park here. If that spot is taken, continue a few hundred yards farther, where the main road crosses the east ridge, offering more parking. From either point, you can walk back to the summit road or hike the east ridge directly. The final stretch involves a 920-foot climb over 0.4 miles. Starting from Weatherby, the road to the summit is 20.08km (12.47 miles). Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1,437 meters. The average gradient is 7.15%.
An alternate approach is possible from the north, via Exit 327 at Durkee. Turn east off the exit, then take the first right, which parallels the freeway to the south. While the road begins paved, it soon becomes gravel or native surface. Continue for about 15 miles to the divide between Big Lookout Mountain and Lookout Mountain to the north. From this point, head east, then follow the track that veers south and climbs the northeast flank of the mountain. Note that this northern route is rougher and may not be suitable for all vehicles. It also crosses private property, so be sure to stay on the road to avoid trespassing.

Is the road to Big Lookout Mountain open in winter?

The road is open only from May until the late fall snows get deep (October or November).
