Driving the road to Prospect Mountain is not a piece of cake
Prospect Mountain is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 3.829m (12,562ft) above the sea level, located in Lake County, in the U.S. state of Colorado. It’s one of the highest mountain roads of Colorado.
Tucked away in the Mosquito Range of the Rocky Mountains, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s an old mining road. Accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It is not generally snow-free until late June or even July in some years. 4x4 required.
The trail is steep. Starting from County Road 3, the ascent is 6km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 402 meters. The average gradient is 6.7%.
