Urad Lake

Road trip guide: Conquering Urad Lake in Colorado

Urad Lake is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 3.288m (10,787ft) above the sea level, located in Clear Creek County, in the U.S. state of Colorado. Full size vehicles should not attempt to drive all the way, as there are a few very narrow spots.

Located in Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests within the Urad Lake State Wildlife Area, the road to the very colorful lake is totally unpaved. It’s called Woods Creek Road. It’s suitable for pick-up trucks and SUVs and it can be used by cars but not recommended. The last part of the road is narrow and rocky.

Accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It is not generally snow-free until late June or even July in some years. The views are amazing. Urad Lake is a popular fishing spot just up-valley from Berthoud Pass. Starting from Berthoud Falls, the dirt road to the lake is 5.31km (3.3 miles) long.
