Road trip guide: Conquering Urad Lake in Colorado

Lake Urad is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 3.288m (10,787ft) above the sea level, located in the U.S. state of Colorado. Full size vehicles should not attempt to drive all the way, as there are a few very narrow spots.

The road is located in Clear Creek County, in the central part of Colorado, in Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests within the Urad Lake State Wildlife Area. The views are amazing. Urad Lake is a popular fishing spot just off of Jones Pass and Berthoud Pass

How long is the road to Urad Lake in Colorado?

The journey to the vibrantly hued lake necessitates traversing the entirely unpaved Woods Creek Road. This route is barricaded by a gate situated in a parking area, marked by a sign for the Urad Lake State Wildlife Area. From County Road 202, also known as Jones Pass Road, the navigable section of this route spans approximately 2.09 kilometers (1.3 miles) leading to the parking lot. This track is best suited for pick-up trucks and SUVs, though it's possible, albeit not recommended, for cars to navigate it. The final stretch of the road is particularly challenging, characterized by its narrowness and rocky terrain.

Is the road to Urad Lake in Colorado open?

It is now a state wildlife area with limited access for motor vehicles. Accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It is not generally snow-free until late June or even July in some years.
