The road to the summit is an unpaved track of dry, hard-packed dirt and loose fine gravel. It’s called E Indian Head Road. The surface is wide but completely exposed, with no shoulders or guardrails. Small rocks are embedded in the roadbed, which will cause constant vibration and can easily damage tires not rated for off-road use.

The road is never too steep. Starting from the paved US-191, the road to the summit is 14.7 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 474 m and the average gradient is 3.22%. It’s totally impassable in winters.
