Wofford Lookout is a high mountain fire lookout tower at an elevation of 2.798m (9,179ft) above sea level, located in Otero County, in the U.S. state of New Mexico.

Where is Wofford Lookout?

The tower is located in the southern part of New Mexico, within the Lincoln National Forest.

When was Wofford Lookout built?

The tower fire lookout tower was built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The site also includes a wood frame cabin (1933) and a storage shed (1937).

Is the road to Wofford Lookout unpaved?

The road to the lookout is totally unpaved and rocky in parts. A 4x4 vehicle is required. The road is closed for vehicular traffic but the road is still there.

Starting from Forest Road162, the road to the summit is 2.57km (1.6 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 149m (489 ft) and the average gradient is 5.79%. 

Is the road to Wofford Lookout open year-round?

Set high in the Sacramento Mountains, the road is not plowed in winters.
