Where is Snowstorm Peak?

The peak is located northwest of Durango in the southwestern part of Colorado, within the San Juan National Forest.

Is the road to Snowstorm Peak unpaved?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s an old mining road. Along the way you can see old mining equipment and abandoned structures. This ride is truly epic with a few tight turns. Be careful: the rocks are sharp. 4WD with good clearance is required.

How long is the road to Snowstorm Peak?

Starting at Kennebec Pass (on County Road 124), the road is 1.12km (0.7 miles) long. The road is pretty steep, hitting a 14% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps.

Is the road to Snowstorm Peak open year-round?

Set high in La Plata Mountains, the road is not plowed in winters. It’s impassable from late spring through late fall (depending on snow).
