The road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s a service road for the chairlifts of Big Sky Resort. It is mostly used to provide access to maintain ski lifts and lodges. It’s narrow and very steep. A 4x4 vehicle is required.

Starting near Rainbow Lodge, the road to the summit is 5.2 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 618 m and the average gradient is 11.88%.

Is the road to Pioneer Mountain open year-round?

Set high in the Rocky Mountains, the trail is open in the months when snow skiing is not available.
