Located within the White River National Forest, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Forest Service Road 812. It comprises narrow parts and steep sections. A 4x4 vehicle is required.

Starting from Alsbury Reservoir, the road to the summit is 4.9 miles long.
Is the road to Haystack Gate open year-round?
Set high in the Elk Mountains, the road is not plowed in winters.
