The road to the summit, located within the Rocky Mountains, starts paved (4.9 miles) but suddenly turns to gravel and rocky. It’s called Whiskey Pass Road (County Road L7). The road is driveable in your standard 4wd vehicle but it's on private land and access is restricted.

Road conditions are always changing. Washouts are common. The road is impassable from October to June (weather permitting). The road is pretty steep. Starting south of San Pedro, it is 24.78km (15.4 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 1.080 meters. The average gradient is 4.35%.
