The road, also known as Scenic Byway 12 (SR-12) or “Highway 12 -A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway-, is 122 miles (197km) long. It’s totally paved. It is a paved alternative to the unpaved high-mountain Hell's Backbone Road, which also connects Boulder and Escalante.

Tucked away on the southern part of Utah, the road runs from U.S. 89 near Panguitch on the west with S.R. 24 near Torrey on the northeast.
