This trail has a little bit of everything. It’s a fun-filled combination of challenging obstacles and incredible scenery. Don't miss impressive Little Arch near cliff edge overlooking Moab. Mountain biking is extremely popular on this trail. Drive with caution and be courteous to bikers at all times. Open all year weather permitting. Best time to go is spring and fall.

This trail passes through remote areas, so you need to be prepared. 4 wheeling is an inherently dangerous activity and shouldn’t be attempted without the appropriate training and equipment. Huge, awkward ledges and many tippy spots. For modified vehicles with very high ground clearance, lockers, large tires and good articulation. Route-finding on loop portion of trail is very challenging. The route visits the mesa top just north of the Colorado River and west of Moab Valley, and it reaches overlooks of the river and valley. A traveler on this road must be experienced and completely devoted to safe, slow and obstacle-conscious driving to deter danger. The trail up to the mesa is a series of slickrock steeps mixed with sections of jeep road. The Portal Trail is a gnarly and dangerous return route. It can be fun for an expert biker, but there are sections where you should get off your bike as you carefully walk along the edge of the cliffs. This is a trail where overly confident bikers die.
