Hans Flat Road in Utah is worth the white-knuckle drive

Hans Flat Road is a rough unpaved track located in the heart of Wayne County, in the U.S. state of Utah.

Hans Flat Road

How long is Hans Flat Road?

Located within the Canyonlands National Park, the road is 46 miles (76 km) long. It runs from UT-24 to the Hans Flat Ranger Station. The road is generally good in dry weather, though one may require high clearance or even 4×4 due to washouts or blowing sand. All trails within the Maze District, including the Flint Trail, past the ranger station, require a high-clearance 4WD. It may become temporarily impassable after heavy rains or snow. It starts off by crossing the large flat expanse of the San Rafael Desert. After a long stretch of relatively flat driving, the road starts climbing, but nothing steep, and it is all fairly gradual.

How to drive the Hans Flat Road?

The track usually has gentle grades and is fairly wide and it’s accessible all year-round. It’s one of the primary access to the remote Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. Due to the district's remoteness and the difficulty of roads and trails, travel to the Maze requires more time. Visitors must be prepared for self-sufficiency and the proper equipment or gear for self-rescue. The trail is well graded and wide.
