Conquering the Wild Horse Road in the Mojave Desert

Wild Horse Road is a 18.50km (11.5 miles) scenic drive located in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California, USA. 4wd vehicle recommended. Its southern end is sandy and soft for two miles.

Wild Horse Road

This graded scenic drive through the desert forms an 11.5-mile semi-circle off the west side of Black Canyon Road. The dirt road winds around and over a series of hills as it descends 1000 feet, with sharp peaks of the Providence Mountains in the distance. This dirt drive is a true experience of solitude as is winds along the secluded canyon. The road runs from its north end on Black Canyon Road near Mid Hills Campground, to its south end also on Black Canyon Road near Hole-in-the-Wall Campground.

The road is steep and tops out at 1.690m (5,544ft) above the sea level. 4 wheel drive strongly recommended. During and after a storm the road may be impassable, even with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and can easily get muddy if it rains making it challenging to get through. The road generally is well maintained and passable in sedans, but the road is subject to washouts. In particular, in the section from about 8-1/2 to 9-1/2 miles out, the road runs in a sandy wash.
