Located in southern Colorado, the road is entirely paved. It is part of the Gold Belt Scenic Byway, the first route to connect gold mines with the Arkansas Valley. Originally a trail connecting ranches and farms in the mountain parklands west of Cripple Creek to Cañon City.

Tucked away in the Rocky Mountains, the road tops out at 2,550m (8,366ft) above sea level. The road is typically open all year round, but short-term closures are common in winter due to dangerous weather conditions.
