How long is Thornton Lake Road?

Located within Skagit Valley, Thornton Lake Road is 8.04km (5.0 miles) long, running from North Cascades Highway, to the west of Newhalem, to the parking for Thornton Lakes Trailhead. The parking lot is fairly small, so it’s better to get there in the morning.

Is Thornton Lake Road open in winters?

Set high in the North Cascades National Park, the road is not plowed or maintained in the winter season.

Is Thornton Lake Road unpaved?

Tucked away in the northwestern corner of Washington, the road is totally unpaved with loose gravel, very rough and steep in places, with deep washboards on switchbacks. It varies in quality depending on what time of year you're there. A 4 wheel drive high clearance vehicle is recommended. The road is sometimes blocked by tree falls. Be ready for potholes and some serious washboarding.
