Located in the San Juan National Forest, to the south of Silverton, Lime Creek Road (Forest Road 591) is totally unpaved, rocky and uneven.

Is Lime Creek Road challenging?

It’s a narrow and rugged dirt road high above Lime Creek. A high clearance 4X4 vehicle is required. Do not risk going further into Lime Creek Road unless you're absolutely sure both the driver and the car can handle it. There is a part of the trail that narrows and you are driving on the edge, so if you have a fear of heights, it’s not recommended Most of the road is only wide enough for one vehicle. Be very cautious if there has been any moisture (rain or snow) as the road likely washes out /floods easily.

How long is Lime Creek Road?

The amazingly scenic mountain road is 17.86km (11.1 miles) long, running parallel to the Million Dollar Highway, to the east of Coal Bank Pass. During the mid 1800's it was the original highway between Silverton and Durango. If your ideal road trip involves getting way off the beaten track then this is the drive for you.

Plan about 2 hours to complete the drive. This road offers jaw-dropping views, unparalleled freedom, and lots of fresh air. The road leads to Potato Lake (also known as Spud Lake).
