Why is it called Gold Bluffs Beach?

Placer mining operations commenced around 1852, but the extraction process proved challenging, and the initial excitement diminished over time. Despite the difficulties, mining activities continued through the 1880s, leaving behind remnants of the mining era that are still visible today.
Can I swim in Gold Bluffs Beach?
While the beach offers scenic beauty, it is not recommended for swimming due to cold water temperatures and strong currents. Visitors are advised to stay out of any closures set up by park staff to protect wildlife habitats.
How long is the road to Gold Bluffs Beach?
The road to the beach is mostly unpaved. It’s called Davison Road. It’s 10.94 km (6.8 miles) long, starting from U.S. 101. After a ⅓-mile paved section, the road continues nearly 7 unpaved miles to its end at a parking lot near the trailhead for Fern Canyon Trail. The road ends at the sands of Gold Bluffs Beach and the 30-foot walls of Fern Canyon.
Can I drive my vehicle on the Davison Road to Gold Bluffs Beach?
The unpaved, narrow route is not suitable for large RVs or trailers. Trailers and vehicles wider than 8 feet or longer than 24 feet are prohibited. Remember to turn on your headlights.

There is a day-use fee to access the beach and Fern Canyon, and during peak season (typically May to September), permits are required. The Gold Bluffs Beach Campground offers secluded camping options close to the ocean, and facilities are limited, so visitors should plan accordingly.
