The road to the lake is unpaved. It’s called Jefferson Lake Road (County Road 37). It’s a graded dirt road that most passenger cars can handle. The area can get busy during summer weekends.

Starting from Jefferson off US Highway 285, the road is 11.74km (7.3 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 368 meters. The average gradient is 3.13%. The lake produces good numbers of lake trout and rainbow trout. It is located in bear country so make sure you keep food items securely packed away.

Situated among 12,000 foot peaks it is one of the first lakes each season to freeze. The road is not maintained for snow throughout the winter. It's not unusual to deal with gale force winds in the afternoons followed by evening rain showers, so prepare accordingly.
