The lagoons are located along the boundary between the states of Morelos and Mexico, within the Lagunas de Zempoala National Park. The lakes are filled by water from rivers and rainfall. During the dry season (November to May), some of them lose water, while others may dry up completely.

The road to the lakes is fully paved. It is the only road connecting major cities like Toluca and Cuernavaca. It can be dangerous due to high traffic volume on a mountainous road.
