Altzomoni is a volcanic peak at an elevation of 4.027m (13,211ft) above the sea level, located in the State of Mexico. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
Set high in the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It can be impassable after rains. A 4x4 vehicle is required. The summit hosts a TV repeater, a mountain hut and Estación de Altura Altzomoni, a high-altitude weather station.
The road to the summit is very steep, hitting an 11% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at Paso de Cortés, the ascent is 7 km (4.34 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 346 meters. The average gradient is 4.94%.
