Is D975 Road Paved?
The road is fully paved for its entire length. However, due to its significant distance, travelers will find the asphalt quality varies considerably—from recently surfaced stretches to sections that are quite worn. It includes part of the European route E99. The road is heavily used, especially by trucks. It has very steep sections, hitting a maximum gradient of 8%.
How Long Is D975 Road?
The road is 379km (235miles) long, running north-south from Doğubayazıt (a town of Ağrı Province, near the border with Iran) to Hakkâri (the seat of Hakkâri District in the Hakkâri Province). Along its way, the road runs parallel to and within a few miles of the Iranian border with several military outposts on the summit of the hills closest to Iran.
Is D975 Road Open Year-Round?
The road climbs over three major mountain passes:
- Güzeldere Geçidi, at an elevation of 2,763m (9,064ft) above sea level.
- Kurubaş Geçidi, at an elevation of 2,236m (7,335ft) above sea level.
- Tendurek Geçidi, at an elevation of 2,602m (8,536ft) above sea level.
The road is usually open year-round, but due to the high elevations and exposure, it can be closed at any time. The road is subject to strong winds and rapid weather changes. Be prepared for the cold and wind! Adverse weather conditions can prompt the closure of the road. It can often be treacherous, with ice and snow accumulating, so exercise caution as you make your way.
