Karabet Geçidi

Karabet Geçidi, one of the highest roads of Europe

Karabet Geçidi is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.994m (9,822ft) above the sea level, located in Van Province, in eastern Turkey. It’s one of the highest roads of Europe.

How long is the Karabet Geçidi pass road?

The road to the summit is called Bahcesaray-Catak road. It's mostly paved and is being improved the last times. The road includes a serie of thrilling hairpin bends. The road is 42.7 km (26.53mi) long. It runs west-east from the village of Bahçesaray towards Gevaş Çatak Yolu Road.

Is the Karabet Geçidi pass open?

The road can be closed anytime due to the bad weather. When the snow falls - which it does in the winter – things get tough and slippery. Here the spring arrives with a blaze of glorious colourful wild flowers. It is said by the locals that they ‘belong to God for half the year'. It's one of the highest roads of the country.
