The road to Camiboğazı Yaylası is for experienced drivers only

Camiboğazı Yaylası is a high mountain plateau located on the boundary of Gümüşhane and Trabzon provinces, in the East Black Sea region of Turkey.

Camiboğazı Yaylası

The road to the plateau, also known as Cami Boğazı Yaylası, is totally unpaved and extremely challenging. It has lots of rocks, ruts, and washed out sections. The quality of the road is extremely poor, especially along the sides of the road. The road is not for the faint hearted with steep drops and a few sections of unpaved road to challenge even the most experienced drives. A mistake could see you falling straight down 200 metres.

The road to the plateau is 59.5 km (36.97 miles) long, running from Yağlıdere to Çamlıyurt. To drive the road without stopping will take most people between 2.5 and 4 hours. A 4a4 vehicle is required.

Set high in the Kalkanlı Mountains, the road tops out at 2.468m (8,097ft) above the sea level. It is usually impassable from late October through late June or early July (depending on snow). The open and close dates all depend on snowmelt and snowfall each year. Take care: the weather is usually foggy and cold. It is a defiant road that although close to civilization feels really quite remote.
