Lac du Vieux Emosson

Lac du Vieux Emosson, a road with 15% parts, narrow with unlit tunnels

Lac du Vieux Emosson is a high mountain reservoir at an elevation of 2.205m (7,234ft) above the sea level, located in Valais, Switzerland. The road is closed to vehicles.

This unbelievable road starts from the Lac d’Emosson, at an elevation of 1.965m (6,446 ft) above the sea level. It’s 5km and is sphalted, but pretty narrow and steep. The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. It was built in 1955.
This little road with restricted access is 5km long, simply stunning. It’s extremely steep and narrow, for almost 2 kms it averages 15% – going through a couple of little unlit tunnels. The view down to the bigger lake is pretty incredible. The road is open to the public during the summer season only. It’s a quiet road with unbelievable views of Mont Blanc.
