Lac d’Emosson

A narrow steep road to Lac d’Emosson

Lac d’Emosson is a high mountain reservoir at an elevation of 1.965m (6,446ft) above the sea level, located in Valais, Switzerland. Near the lake, there's the Col de la Gueulaz mountain pass.

The road to the dam, also known as Barrage Emosson, is asphalted and was built in 1925. It’s pretty steep. Starting from Finhaut, the ascent is 10.7 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 913 meters. The average percentage is 8.5 %. The dam can be reached by this road or by a funicular-train-funicular trip. On the summit there’s a restaurant. This is a steep climb- the last 6 kms all between 9% and 10% (and much steeper above the lake) – on quiet roads with unbelievable views of Mont Blanc. The road is open to the public during the summer season only.
An unbelievably narrow steep road continues to the Lac du Vieux Emosson, at an elevation of 2.205m above the sea level, but it's closed to vehicles.
