A sensational road to Lac de Moiry
Lac de Moiry is a high mountain reservoir at an elevation of 2.249m (7,378ft) above the sea level, located in the municipality of Grimentz, in the district of Sierre in the Swiss canton of Valais. The road to reach the lake is asphalted and it was completed in 1950's.
The road to the reservoir is paved and chains or snow tyres can be required throughout the year. It's one of the nicest lakes in the world with its tremendeous blue color. The barrage was built in 1958 and is 600m in length and 148m in height.
Starting from Mayoux, the ascent is 17.5 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1.145 meters. The average percentage is 6.5 %. This very scenic route has great views on glaciers and high, snow-capped mountains. Once at the lake the road continues for four more easy kms to Lac de Châteaupré, another high mountain reservoir at an elevation of 2.357m (7,732ft) above the sea level. This road is usually open from end of June to the first big snowfall, but can be closed anytime when the access is not cleared of snow. Road closures can be frequent, so check conditions before traveling to this area.
