A memorable road trip to Hohtälli

Hohtälli is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 3.274m (10,741ft) above the sea level, located in the canton of Valais, in the southwestern part of Switzerland. It’s one of the highest roads of Europe.

Hohtälli

Set high at the foot of the Matterhorn, in the Pennine Alps, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s a chairlift access trail. 4x4 vehicles only. This trail can be done only a very narrow time-frame in the summer (end of August). It’s one of the highest roads of the country.

The road is very steep, hitting a 30% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at Zermatt, the ascent is 11km (6,83 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1.667 meters. The average gradient is 15.15%. The summit hosts a cable-car station, with stunning views of the Dufourspitze and the Gorner Glacier and Grenzgletscher below.
