Starting from Barrio, the road to the summit is 7.1 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 860 m and the average gradient is 12.11%. Before reaching the summit, the road climbs up another mountain pass, at an elevation of 1.565m (5,134ft) above sea level, known as Altu la Madalena.

Set high in the central area of the Cantabrian Mountains, weather conditions can change quickly and be harsh. Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. It suffers the harsh meteorological conditions of the area every winter.
