Driving the off-road track to Lago Cuélebre in Somiedo

Lago Cuélebre, often referred to as Laguna de Invierno, is a high mountain glacial lake at an elevation of 1,843m (6,046ft) above sea level. It is located in the heart of the Somiedo Natural Park, in the autonomous community of Asturias, northern Spain.

Lago Cuélebre

The lake is tucked away in one of the most protected and wild areas of the Cantabrian Mountains. Somiedo is famous for its steep valleys, traditional "teitos" (thatched stone huts), and for being one of the last strongholds of the Cantabrian brown bear. The drive to the lake offers a raw, high-alpine experience, surrounded by limestone peaks and rolling green pastures that are often covered in thick fog or snow during the winter months.

Is the road to Lago Cuélebre difficult to drive?

The road to the lagoon is entirely unpaved and presents a significant challenge. It is a rough mountain track that requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. The terrain is rocky and can be particularly tricky after rain, as the mud and loose stones reduce traction on the steeper sections. Due to its high altitude, the track is frequently blocked by snow in winter and can remain inaccessible well into the spring. It is a slow drive that requires experience in mountain navigation.

How steep is the climb to Lago Cuélebre?

Starting from the village of Outeiro, the ascent to the lake is 7.9 km (4.9 miles) long. During this journey, you will face an elevation gain of 586 meters. With an average gradient of 7.41%, the climb is steady but features several ramps that are much steeper, especially as you approach the final basin where the lake is situated. Drivers should stay on the main track to respect the park's strict environmental regulations, as this area is a vital habitat for local wildlife.
