Santa Bárbara

Santa Bárbara is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2.218m (7,276ft) above the sea level, located in southern Spain, in the province of Granada, Andalusia. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.

The road to the summit, located in the Parque Natural Sierra de Baza, in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, is gravel, rocky, rough and narrow. It’s an old mine road with some hairpin turns near the end. 4x4 vehicle required. Thunderstorm activity can quickly change unpaved roads to four-wheel-drive condition or make them impassable. Expect very harsh winters. Near the summit there’s a mountain lodge called Refugio Prados del Rey. Along this track you will see plenty of evidence of former mining activity. The journey offers an exhilarating driving experience, with superb views. At the summit there are fantastic views to be enjoyed over the Altiplano de Granada, including those of Cerro Jabalcon and the peak of La Sagra.
